Kim Tschang-yeul was a Korean painter best known for a single image that defined his artistic career the “water droplet”. Though based in Paris for much of his life, his roots and experiences in Korea shaped much of his perspective as an artist.

Born in 1929 in what is now North Korea, Kim lived through the Japanese occupation and the Korean War. During the war, he fled to South Korea, leaving his family behind. These early experiences of conflict, loss, and displacement would remain a quiet presence in his work.

He studied painting at Seoul National University and later cofounded the Modern Artists’ Association, which played a significant role in Korea’s postwar art scene. In 1965, Kim moved to New York. There, he encountered new movements such as Pop Art and Minimalism. The energy of the city and the unfamiliar environment brought both inspiration and isolation. During this period, his style began to shift from thick, textured surfaces to flatter compositions, often featuring abstract, organic forms.

In 1969, Kim relocated to Paris. It was there that he began painting water droplets a motif that would become central to his work. The following year, he presented one of his first droplet paintings at the Salon de May in Paris. What started as an artistic experiment developed into a lifelong focus.

For Kim, the water droplet became more than just a recurring image. It was a way of exploring themes like presence and absence, nature and culture, clarity and illusion. He described the act of painting water drops as a method of returning to a state of emptiness a way to let go of fear, anger, and ego.

From the 1970s onward, he continued to refine this image. Each painting reflected subtle changes, but the core idea remained the same a quiet, focused exploration of form and feeling. Unlike artists who constantly sought new subjects, Kim chose to stay with one, going deeper rather than wider.

His works are now part of major museum collections around the world, including institutions in Korea, Japan, France, and the United States. They are recognized for their technical precision and the calm, reflective space they create.

Kim Tschang-yeul passed away in 2021, but his work continues to resonate. His choice to center his practice around a single, simple form shows how much can be expressed with clarity, focus, and restraint.


김창열은 ‘물방울 화가’로 알려져 있다. 물방울 형태는 화가가 파리로 이주한 시기인 1970년에 창안되어, 그가 별세하기 전까지 김창열 작품에 주된 모티프가 되었다. 물방울 그림은 시기별로 다양한 구상으로 등장한다. 단순히 하나 혹은 다수의 물방울이 캔버스에서 나타나다가, 마대의 거친 표면 위에, 그리고 바탕에 천자문이 그려진 채로, 혹은 물방울이 일그러지고, 뭉개진 채로 다양한 형태 변화가 시도된다. 물방울을 그리게 된 것은 순전히 우연이었다. 파리 근교 빨레소(Palaiseau)라는 곳에서 마구간을 작업실로 사용하던 시절, 밤새 그린 유화가 마음에 들지 않아 캔버스 위에 물을 뿌렸다. 그 위로 아침 햇살이 비추었고 투명하게 맺힌 물방울이 빛을 머금은 모습에 매료되었다. 영롱하게 빛나는 김창열의 물방울은 일제강점기와 6.25를 겪으며 쌓인 상흔의 흔적을 정화하려는 시도로 해석되며, 배경의 천자문은 그의 조부에 대한 추억이자 미국과 프랑스에서 활동하면서도 간직했던 동양의 철학과 정신성에 대한 고집이다.

김창열(1929.12.24~2021.1.5)은 서예에 조예가 깊은 할아버지에게 붓글씨를 배우며 회화를 접했고, 외삼촌으로부터 데생을 배웠다. 16세에 월남하여 서울에서 이쾌대의 성북회화연구소에서 다녔다. 1948년 서울대학교 미술대학에 입학하였으나 2학년 때 6.25 전쟁 의용군으로 끌려갔고, 휴전 후에는 이쾌대의 회화연구소를 다닌 것이 문제가 되어 학교 재등록이 거부되었다. 1957년 5월 김창열은 장성순, 하인두, 김서봉 등과 함께 <한국현대미술가협회>를 결성하고 미국 공보원에서 첫 동인전을 개최했다. 이후 1958년 동인전 4회는 한국의 앵포르멜 운동으로 세간의 주목을 받았다. 박서보의 주선으로 1961 제2회 파리 비엔날레에 참가했고, 1965년에는 상파울로 비엔날레 출품 작가로 선정되었다. 김환기의 추천으로 1965년 런던의 세계청년화가대회 한국대표로 나갔고, 1966년 록펠러 재단의 후원으로 1966년부터 1968년 Art Students League에서 수학했다. 이후 1969년 백남준의 도움으로 파리아방가르드 페스티벌 참가를 계기로, 파리에 정착했다.

​1972년 파리의 권위있는 초대전 살롱 드 메(Salon de Mai)전에서 물방울 그림 (1972)으로 세계적인 무대에서 한국을 대표하는 작가로 데뷔하였다. 그는 1996년 프랑스에서 문화예술공로훈장 슈발리에를, 2017년에는 문화예술공로훈장 오피시에를 수훈하였고, 작고한 이후 뉴욕타임스에서는 그의 부고기사에, 김창열이 “동양 철학과 전쟁 트라우마의 영향을 받은 영롱한 물방울 그림들을 창작하는 데 반세기를 헌신했다”고 보도했다. 2004년 프랑스 국립 쥐드폼 미술관 초대전에서 물방울 예술 30년을 결산하는 전시를 열었으며, 2005년 베이징의 중국국가박물관에서 초정전을 열었다. 또한 2009년 표갤러리 서울, 2008년 표갤러리 LA, 2006년 표갤러리 베이징, 갤러리 현대, 동경갤러리 등에서 개인전을 가졌다. 그리고 2016년 9월에는 제주도립김창열미술관이 개관되었고, 그의 작품은 현재 프랑스 퐁피두센터, 일본 도쿄국립미술관, 호암미술관, 국립현대미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.
