한국 전통 건축에서도 완성도 있는 구조로 평가 받는 팔작지붕 의 처마 선에서 영감 받은 작가는 이 유려한 곡선을 가구와 오브제에 대입한다. 가구 스케일을 건축적으로 키우거나, 건축물의 웅장함과 선의 미학을 담아 내기도 한다. 그렇게 얻은 곡선, 곧은 듯 휘어지다가 하늘로 솟는 형상의 선은 사물에 힘찬 여백과 온화함의 정서를 부여한다. 작가의 작업에서 선은 조형 요소 이상의 중요한 개념으로 기능한다. 전통과 현대를 관통하는 한국적인 미를 연상시키고, 나아가 국경과 시대를 뛰어넘는 완전무결함의 정수를 두루 은유 하는 것이다. 고전성과 현대성을 겸비한 이 선은 감성 혹은 우연이 아니라 철저히 과학적인 방식으로 귀결된 결과물이다. 기본적으로 3D 프로그램을 활용하는 작가는 프로그램 자체 기능인 불린 Boolean이라는 테크닉에 주목해 완벽한 곡선을 구현한다. 수학자 조지 불 George Boole이 창안한 이 모델링 방식은 기본 도형 오브제 간의 교집합, 합집합, 여집합 등을 활용해 다양한 형태를 만드는 도구다.

작가는 도형들의 교집합을 확인하고 이를 제외한 남은 부분을 살려내거나, 각 도형들이 겹치는 부분의 합집합을 조형화 한다. 실을 활용해 얻은 비례감으로 공간을 만들던 옛사람들의 지혜가 기계와 기술로 되살아난 셈이다. 완벽한 비율의 선을 강조하기 위해 작가는 먹의 느낌을 품은 블랙을 선택했다. 블랙은 빛을 흡수하기도, 반사하기도 하면서 굴곡진 모습과 대비 등을 직관적으로 보여주는 동시에 색을 제하겠다는 작가 의지의 단서로 기능한다. 덜어내는 과정으로 탄생한 선은 군더더기 없는 색과 만나 한결 여유롭게 스스로를 드러낸다. 더할 나위 없이 적절한 유연함으로 시공간을 묶어낸다.

Drawing inspiration from the eaves of the half-hipped roof, a highly regarded structure in Korean traditional architecture, the artist incorporates these elegant curves into his furniture and objects. At times, he enlarges the furniture to an architectural scale or captures the grandeur of buildings and the beauty of lines. The resulting curves, initially straight and then slowly bending up towards the sky, imbue objects with a powerful sense of negative space and elegance. In Lee’s work, lines serve as a crucial element that goes beyond mere formative elements. They evoke a sense of Korean beauty encompassing tradition and modernity, embodying the essence of perfection that transcendsborders and times. The line in his work, which merges both classicism and modernity, is not based on mere intuition or coincidence but rather on a meticulous scientific approach. Lee employs a tool called Boolean in 3D modeling programs to achieve a perfect curve. This modeling method, originally devised by mathematician George Boole, enables the creation of various shapes by utilizing the intersection, union, and complement of basic shape objects.

Lee examines the intersection of the figures, removes the intersection to work with the remaining parts alone, or forms a newshape by working with multiple overlapping parts of each figure. In essence, the artist rekindles the wisdom of traditional artisans who used strings to build architecture with proportion, by incorporating software and technology. To accentuate the perfect proportion and curvature of the lines, Lee uses a black color that possesses an ink-like quality. The color black enhances the curves, creating a strong contrast by absorbing and reflecting light, while also indicating the artist’s intention to minimize the use of color. The lines, created through the process of subtraction, become even more prominent when combined with the simple color. They are seamlessly woven together, connecting time and space with remarkable flexibility.
